1.What piqued your interest in flooring?
A: "After I served in Vietnam, I worked part time and eventually purchased part ownership of a bar on Caroline Beach in North Carolina. One of our customers at the bar owned a flooring store and invited me to help him part time. My first job alone was to install carpet on a 65" pontoon boat. From floor to ceiling and bedrooms in between. It was a challenge, but I certainly learned how to install carpet. I realized how much I loved doing it, and the challenge it presented to me.
2.How did you start?
A: "Later on, I was the managing director of Redstones Showcase Cinemas in West Springfield, where I had worked over 100 hours/week. In my spare time, I cleaned and installed carpets from my garage in Westfield. This eventually grew to the point I left my job and pursued flooring full time to what it is today."
3.What made you keep going?
A: "Staying self-employed was my driving force. The satisfaction of reaping the rewards from my own creation fueled my ambition to continue expanding."
4.Did anyone tell you, you couldn't or wouldn't get far?
A: "Not really. We faced challenges initially and had to use funds from my personal account to keep the business running, leading to some internal disagreements."
5.How did you grow?
A: "Our growth primarily stemmed from making sound decisions regarding flooring companies and, of course, prioritizing our customers' satisfaction."
6.What are some of the lessons you've learned along the way?
A: "Many revolve around recruiting the correct personnel and employing skilled installers. Both aspects are crucial for the success of any business."
7.Is there anything you would do differently?
A: "I don't think so. We have achieved significant growth, starting from working out of my garage to owning a business.”
8.What has been your top priority in running your own business?
A: "Customer service is crucial! It plays a significant role as repeat business and referrals depend on it."
9.What is your biggest reward from it all?
A: "I'd have to say customer satisfaction over all else. It means so much when a customer tells me how happy they were working with my staff and installers."
10.Lastly, since you've been in the business for so long. If you were stuck with just one floor to choose from. What floor would it be and why?
A: "I simply love carpet, always have. It was the only floor I sold when I started. Carpet has come so far since then. If the right one, carpet can offer so much. There's a carpet for any room in a home."
