"I Know Just As Much About The Supernatural As I Do About Interior Design."

Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice' Cast, Then and Now - ABC News

BACKGROUND

Beetlejuice (1988), is arguably one of the most-watched Halloween Films of all time. With a dark humored script, twistedly sinister plot and sets ahead of it's time, its an almost irresistible watch once those Autumn months roll around.

Set in a quaint town in New England, we meet a lovely couple who's ordinary life (and death) takes a rather supernatural turn for the worst. The story starts with Adam and Barbara Maitland enjoying a quiet staycation in their lovely Victorian Style home. The same home they've dedicated years to decorating and maintaining. The same home they spent their last living thoughts dreaming about while treating themselves to wallpaper they'd been admiring. A deadly accident that sends their car off a bridge and into the river starts a landslide of strange and unexpecting events to occur, which in turn transforms their entire livelihood - and home.

While Adam and Barbara miraculously end up trapped in their own home as ghosts, the Deetz family moves in with a devastating mission in mind: they are going to ultra-modernize the home. Reflecting on the life's work they put into their beautiful home, the Maitland's decided that along with Beetlejuice's help, their new job was getting the Deetzes out of it.

There's no spoilers here! To find out how the story ends, you'll have to watch Beetlejuice yourself. But if you're here to find out more about the interior design throughout the film - keep reading!

Unfortunately for all fans, there is no "real" Beetlejuice house. The exterior was a shell of a home built on a hill overlooking East Corinth, Vermont, providing the signature New England feel they needed. The interiors that we're going to discuss below were built on a soundstage and designed by Catherine Mann - a popular set decorator in the late 1980's.

MAITLAND HOUSE

Adam and Barbara Maitland were a middle-aged couple with the apparent interior style of two old souls. A style seen transform into a trend time and time again - warm comforting woods, muted pastels, gingham matched with tiny florals and neutrals; a little bit of the late 80's small-town Americana style in every corner.

DEETZ HOUSE

An aspiring sculptor and artist, Delia Deetz moves into the Maitland home with a drastic change in mind. Along with Delia moves in husband Charles and seemingly "goth" teenage daughter, Lydia. Once Delia sees the vintage "mess" of the Maitland home, she calls in a house decorator to modernize it to her taste.

Once remodeled, the Maitland house was no longer. With a stark grey, hyper-modern space full of pointy sculptures and sharp angles - the late Americana style was something of the past. Pops of bold, dark colors surprised every room while marble, stone, and granite seeped over every counter space. Blue lighting illuminated your every turn, turning the once inviting house cold and unwelcoming.

Lydia Deetz had a personality that was starkly different than anyone else in her family; and her personal space reflected that. With a dark and quirky feel, her bedroom is coated with a bright green floor, surrounded by purple walls lined by floral patterns. The yellow furniture accompanying her safe space is eerily protected by rust orange linens.

NEITHERWORLD

The last but arguable most notable set to talk about is the Neitherworld - better known as Beetlejuice's "afterlife," or where he spends most of his time. Everything in his world is exaggerated with a distorted and twisted version of reality. All pieces of interior design are over the top and ramped with colors like vibrant yellows, royal blue, neon's, shocking pinks, and the iconic acid green accompanied by the white and black pattern.

While providing us the subtle fear and twistedness we search for around Halloween, there is a part of the film that entices the consumers who have an eye for interior design. From dark and malevolent, to vintage and floral - Beetlejuice proved its every feeling on set.
