"Gothic architecture and design are more concerned with light through rather than on." - Marshall McLuhan

When you hear the word "gothic", most people think of the novelty version of the word - where spooky season meets decor. Although Halloween makes for the perfect time to discuss the style, Gothic design is quite elegant and meaningful.

The Victorian Gothic style comes from the Gothic Revival movement of 19th century England. With a mix of admiration from medieval architecture and literary themes of the time; dramatically dark but romantic environments started to flourish.

As such an important part of design and architectural history, the Gothic style can be seen today branched out into many different sub-styles; each one taking the elegance and core characteristics and transforming it into their own. Here you can learn about the one that started it all and what flooring would best enhance your own recreation!

Victorian Gothic Style

Victorian homes were built and designed to show off the status and monetary wealth of those who lived within them. You would find multi-story mansions with windows galore, grand fireplaces, intricate woodwork, and ornate moldings. Despite the darker aesthetic, these homes were not just doom and gloom. The designers felt it was important to add soft and gentle accents, as balance is the key to Gothic Design. These accents offset the darker components, with the example of large bright windows added on to balance the dark walls enclosing the space.

One of the tell tale signs that a Victorian home was of Gothic style, was the color palette. Black is the almost obvious color choice to work around. While some people paint their walls entirely black and get flooring to match, you don't have to completely indulge in the color to achieve the style.

Whilst the color black achieves the Gothic feel, there are many other colors that bring in the rich taste of the Victorian Era. Think royalty and richness - with gemstone and jewel colors like amethyst, emerald greens, dark blues, and ruby reds. Pairing these with the metallic gold, silver, or rose gold of your liking wraps it all together in a romantic ribbon that you can't help but admire.

Victorian Gothic homes are all about dramatic effect. With luxurious drapery casting shadows through the warm, low lighting from vintage chandeliers, wall sconces other mood lighting - it's hard not to feel. Extravagant decor instigates the feeling of value: intricate patterns, lush fabrics of faux furs and velvets, trinkets in every corner, and hanging pictures framing every empty space.

No matter which way you decide to design your Victorian Goth space, with drama and balance - you can't go wrong.
